Julie Sweetenham: Volunteer

I started as a volunteer at the Community Cancer Centre in July 2008. I work on reception, do administration and I am also a co-ordinator for the friends of CCC.

I became a volunteer due to the fact that my own grandmother died of breast cancer in 1972, I never met her as I was born after she passed away. She had cancer at a time when the support was not there for sufferers of cancer in the way in which it is today.

I used to pass by the Community Cancer Centre everyday when walking my son to school and used to think, "What is that place all about", so I decided to find out for myself. I went into HAVS the agency for volunteering and found that there was an opening for a volunteer on reception. I applied for the position, came in for an interview with Bren, the Manager and the rest is history.

At first I thought to myself that all I would do is sit on reception and answer phone calls, how wrong was I! I have done ‘Listening Ear’ training with Macmillan which enables me to assist clients that use the centre. I have become involved in the friends of CCC, which I am in the early stages of. I have assisted at functions like the launch of ‘It will change my life’ project and the ‘Indulgence Evening’ which is to raise ‘Breast Health Awareness’. I generally put my hand to most things within the centre if I am asked to help out.

The centre has a lovely and relaxed environment which shows on the faces of the clients that access the centre, also the Staff that work here including myself, are relaxed. We enjoy being here, as it is so chilled out. So much so, we have made friends as well as working along side each other.

It is coming up to a year of me being here at the CCC, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I feel satisfied in myself that I am helping everyday people, with their cancer journey even if I am in the background. They say "many hands make light work".
